What I Didn't Expect in 2014

Friday, January 09, 2015

Life is unexpected. It's a cliche but it is true. I sometimes find myself thinking, if someone told me a year ago that (enter event) would happen to me, I wouldn't have believed them. But alas, here I am, and that just happened.
Since its has just become 2015, I decided to look back at 2014 to find all the unexpected things that happened that year. I admit it's a little frightening. By looking back at what you didn't know would happen just a year ago makes me realize that 2015 is full of things I don't even know about yet!

So, without going into a full existential crisis, here are five things I didn't expect in 2014:

1. Won the Northern Indiana Innovation Competition

In October, I submitted four different innovation ideas to the competition. I never would have thought that two of them would make it to the semi-finals and then have one of them win the entire thing! This was such a great experience in learning how to develop an idea and how to network with local business leaders. I can't wait to submit new ideas for the 2015 competition!

2. Met Austin Carlile from Of Mice and Men

In July, I dragged my friend and two cousins to the Chicago Warped Tour. One of my favorite bands, Of Mice and Men, and my favorite band member, Austin Carlile, were playing at the festival/concert. After waiting in multiple lines for VIP tickets and meet and greet passes, I fullfilled my goal and got to meet and shake hands with Austin. Afterwards, I was even in the front row for their set. I would have never imagined that I would have this opportunity.

3. Discovered that hockey is actually interesting

With the influence of my friend Skylar, I was introduced to the world of professional hockey. I have to admit that it is pretty interesting! I was able to go to the Blackhawks 2014 Training Camp in September and I even have a few teams that I loosely follow. Skylar helped me with a Hockey 101 post on Tealaholic back in November.

4. Got an internship and became a "Social Media Queen"

In May, I started my marketing internship and became a active member of the marketing, customer service, blogging, and social media teams. I spoke a few times on Ecom Experts for an audience of about 10,000 listeners about blogging and social media. I have studied marketing and social media for years on my own and I am so happy to have a job where I can use my skills and continue to learn.

5. Attended Chicago College Fashion Week and Chicago Click Z Live

Two events I attended in 2014 were directly influenced by my tealaholic blog and experience with the Ecom Experts radio show. It is awesome that these two media channels were able to take me to real events in such a short amount of time with them.
In October, I was able to attend the Chicago College Fashion Week sponsored by Her Campus, Boohoo.com, Bare Minerals, and other big name brands. My friends and I had a great time at the event especially due to our VIP treatment.
Just a few weeks later, I attended the Chicago Click Z Live conference. This conference had a lot of regional businesses and speakers. I enjoyed listening to the speakers the most since I learned so much.

What is something you didn't expect to happen in 2014?
